How GIFI was found
GIVING Is FUN INITIATIVE (GIFI) was found by Blessing Mlanga an International student from Tanzania while studying in Malaysia in 2015. She started GIFI with the aim to help underprivileged school children in Malaysia and Tanzania. Inspired by Blake Mycoskie and his One for One initiative TOMS in Malaysia.
Blessing always loved GIVING and sometimes her friends laughed at her on how she could work tirelessly with no pay to support a friend so easily, those who got a chance to be close to her knows her better. She did couple of volunteer works and run fundraising events with different NGOs while at school to help school children in need in different countries she got the opportunity to visit and study in.
As she worked with different NGOs she met different school children who need help. She wished to do more to them but she didn’t have enough money as she was just a student depending on her monthly support from her family. As lucky as she was to travel and study in different countries she came up with an idea that can help to grow her passion in GIVING.
She loved fashion and style herself, through fashion she saw the beauty of colors and the functionality of African print cloth as well as the hard work carried out by the single mothers in Tanzania to support their children to go to school. Witnessing the struggle of these underprivileged children and their will to study leads Blessing to think of an initiative with the aim to promote the beauty of FUN and GIVING while raising fund support and improve lives of those in need.
She started by selling T-shirts and African print outfits made by single women in her home-country, to help them to support their children at school. For every piece which she sold she were able to source funding to provide less privileged children with school uniforms and school kits, both in her home-country and in the country and Malaysia where she was studying.
Blessing’s motivation to give back and her dream of founding a social enterprise came from her own life story. Blessing grew up as an underprivileged child in Tanzania. She walked to school barefoot, without a school uniform for most of her childhood. Yet she was eventually faced with the opportunity to travel abroad and to study in different countries provided by her German family. (Guardians)
Blessing now applies her International student life experiences to connect locals and Internationals from different countries around the world every year, to remember and celebrate their school journeys and gather their voices to support less privileged school children, who are currently going through what she went through as a child, with the hopes that they may be given the same opportunities to see the importance of education, and enjoy their school life like others.
BEHIND HER GIVING MOTIVATION STORY
The story behind the name GIVING In FUN INITIATIVE (GIFI) is a life story of a very strong women called MANJERI. Manjeri, was an African woman who grew up in Uganda, East Africa, who loved giving and used it as her strength to move forward whenever she was in pain. Manjeri managed to travel and live abroad to experience life outside her home country. Following her adventurous life abroad with ups and down she finally returned to Uganda, now a single mother of 3 children with nothing but two pieces of African print cloths in her suitcase to start her new life.

Poor as she may have been, Manjeri never stopped giving and sharing whatever she had with those who were less fortunate than her.
Due to the many struggles she faced in her daily life Manjeri passed away too early leaving behind her three children – among them Blessing Mlanga. (our GIFI founder)
These three children have been gifted with different life paths whereby they have combined their life experiences and gifts together to inspire and help those who are experiencing the same life as they in the past.
And so together they are the force and the souls behind GIFI’ initiative, wishing to share with you that GIVING IS FUN and is a beautiful thing to do for one another when gather and celebrate life together without looking of who we are, where we come from, our colors or cultures, life status or money definitions.
